What happens when a law doesn’t do enough?
What happens when it has bad loopholes that are easy to exploit?
The truth is - in many cases - that the bad laws and loopholes stay in place.
Maybe the law gets changes and improved - if there is enough media and political pressure. But it seems a lot of the time the issue never gets bubbled to the surface again - at least not for a long time.
So the truth is when we let bad laws go on the books they often say.
All the promises to revisit them again and make them better usually don’t happen.
This has been the case with a lot of the 2021 Florida legislation. Many people were helped. But those that fell in a loophole or weak spot? Most of them are struggling to get any action at all.
This is why we have to push hard at all aspects of the legislation. We can’t get the bad get on the books. We need to try to get it right the first time.
And when we don’t get what we want we need to get the pressure back on right away.
The political process responds to pressure from voters and media attention.
We can’t give up our most powerful tool for less than excellent outcomes.
Most of the issues we are dealing with in 2022 are issues that could have been fixed in 2021 - if the laws had been updated the right way.
Let’s keep this from happening again.
