Governor DeSantis is pushing the Florida legislature to pass the medical free speech bill HB 687 and SB 1184:
The simple idea is to allow healthcare providers to think and challenge the status quo.
It's scary to think of the world we may live in if healthcare providers cannot do their own independent analysis and speak out when they disagree with established protocols. Many times our well-intentioned health agencies have approved medications or treatments to only find out later that it was mistake. Think of Thalidomide, the swine flu vaccines and Phen-Phen. We must allow our doctors the independence to apply their own judgment and to challenge health standards they believe may be incorrect. Otherwise, our entire healthcare system is locked into group-think with the inability to innovate. Such a system would be very likely to lead to more deaths and medical injuries for patients.
If we had a standard like this in the 1400's we would all be forced to say the world is flat even though scientific understanding has advanced.
We have to allow our medical understandings to be challenged and to evolve.
However, the bill could do more. It could give doctors the freedom to use reasonable treatment plans that they and their patients agree upon.
As many of us know existing systems are often keeping doctors from using some of the treatments they may think is best for their patients.
