This email will continue a series about what can be prioritized in the 2022 Florida legislative session. Our prior posts are available on SubStack.
The key is to get pressure on these key issues. Representatives and Senators may attempt to avoid these issues by claiming it’s too late for new bills be filed. These issues can be handled by committees who can create new bills. Or these issues can be amended into existing bills.
Key issue 3: Employment Abuses
It’s not getting a lot of press, but a lot of employees are being treated as second-class citizens because they have not taken the vaccine. Some are losing their jobs (more on that in an upcoming post) and some are just being treated poorly.
Christmas wasn’t that long ago. Back at Christmas - a time for unity, family and love - it is reported that many employees weren’t allowed to attend their company’s Christmas party because they didn’t have their vaccination.
Meanwhile other unvaccinated employees aren’t allowed into the building and have to use port-a-potties at some companies.
And for other employers the unvaccinated have to wear masks.
And at some companies - particularly airlines - the unvaccinated are being “accomodated” by being put on unpaid leave.
The Florida laws passed in November, 2021 were supposed to keep employees from being fired based on vaccination status. But they didn’t address differential treatment.
Also some employers are ignoring Florida law claiming federal law controls.
So what to do?
Ask for anti-discrimination protection in Florida. Get the legislature to state you can’t treat people differently on vaccination status.
And we’ll be diving more into the need for anti-discrimination protection in Florida and how it differs from exemptions from vaccine mandates (which is what was passed in November, 2021).
See you soon!
Shawn
