Don’t Rely On The Sweet Nothings
Just because a politician says they will help you doesn’t guarantee it
One of the biggest mistakes advocates make is listening to the sweet nothings politicians will tell them in meetings.
It is so hard as an advocate to even get our issues heard.
There are so many walls. So many.
We fight and fight just to get that chance.
And then - often - the politician agrees with us!
And many advocates stop there. Having heard a nice statement from the politican they know their work is done.
Yet at this stage the work has just begun.
Getting the politician to agree with your position is just a start.
What are they going to do next?
How will the laws get changed?
What other things need to happen to get the law changed?
Getting a politician to say they will help you is, sadly, often just a way for the politician to get you off their back.
The real work is next - how will the work get done to the legislation you want passed?
